Hopi Community Design Workshop

This studio tasked students from the Sustainable Emergency Architecture Masters Program (UIC Barcelona) to research culturally-responsive planning approaches for a future housing development in Hopiland. Hopiland comprises some of the longest continuously inhabited communities in North America where the Hopi people continue a distinct set of traditional life ways. The design brief tasked the students to study local materials, vernacular architecture and regional context. They then produced conceptual approaches to habitation, site improvement, landscape planting, land use and community connectivity. Portions of the student’s work were reviewed with community stakeholders in the course of ongoing design dialogue and will inform ongoing discussions and design/build processes.
